Meta Advantage+ campaigns: when should you let the algorithm drive?

In short: Meta’s Advantage+ campaigns hand the algorithm three decisions you used to make by hand: how the budget is split, who sees the ad, and where it appears. Meta unified the setup for these campaigns in 2025 and treats a campaign as “Advantage+” when all three are on together. They work when you have accurate purchase tracking, enough results for the algorithm to learn from, and enough variety in your ads. They stumble when data is missing or the ads are few and alike.
A few years ago, running Meta ads meant picking interests and ages precisely. Today much of that work belongs to the algorithm, and your role has changed: feed it the right data and good ads, and judge the result by your store’s numbers.
What changed in Advantage+?
According to Meta’s developer blog, Meta extended the campaign setup in May 2025 so you no longer choose between an “Advantage+ shopping campaign” and a manual one; there is one setup in which you either turn on automation or keep control. Meta treats a sales campaign as “Advantage+” when three tools come together:
- Advantage+ campaign budget: the algorithm splits the budget between ad sets by performance.
- Advantage+ audience: on in at least one ad set, so the algorithm looks for buyers itself, and what you give it becomes a suggestion rather than a limit.
- Advantage+ placements: on in every ad set, so the ad runs across Facebook, Instagram, Reels, Stories and more, wherever it’s cheapest and best suited.
Meta says a campaign that combines all three performs the same as an Advantage+ sales campaign. It also announced that the old campaign APIs (ASC) stop accepting new campaigns from the first quarter of 2026, so the unified setup is now the way.
When does it suit your store?
- You have reliable purchase tracking: the pixel and the server-side conversion API send the real order. Read server-side tracking.
- You have enough results: Meta’s learning phase needs roughly 50 results within 7 days to settle. With a very small budget, learning takes longer.
- Your products have clear demand and a fairly broad audience in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.
- You want to grow fast without managing dozens of ad sets by hand. See how to scale your campaigns.
When does it stumble?
- Missing data: if the platform doesn’t see most of your orders, it learns from a distorted sample.
- Few, similar ads: when targeting is automated, the ad itself becomes your most important steering tool. Three similar images give the algorithm no options.
- Existing customers who’d buy anyway: automation may chase people already close to buying. Compare total sales, not just platform numbers.
- A product for a very narrow audience (such as a service for one profession): manual targeting is sometimes more precise.
How do you feed the algorithm properly?
- The purchase event first: make sure each purchase arrives once with the right value, from both the pixel and the server, with deduplication.
- Variety in the ads: short vertical video, a product image, customer-style content (UGC), and a clear offer. Each opens a different audience.
- A clean product catalog: clear images, correct prices and up-to-date availability.
- Don’t touch the campaign every day: big changes restart learning. Change gradually, and wait a week before judging.
- Judge by your numbers: real return and break-even from your store. Try the ROAS and break-even calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Should I drop manual targeting entirely?
Not necessarily. Many accounts combine: an Advantage+ campaign for broad sales, and small manual campaigns to test specific offers or audiences. The numbers decide the split.
How much budget does an Advantage+ campaign need?
There’s no fixed number. A practical rule: enough budget for about 50 purchases a week so it leaves the learning phase, worked out from your expected cost per order. Read how much ad budget you need.
Does Advantage+ work for services, not just stores?
The unified setup covers sales and app campaigns, and there is similar automation for lead campaigns. In every case, measure the real result: the order or the qualified lead, not the click.
The bottom line
Advantage+ is a powerful tool if you give it accurate data, varied ads and enough patience, and a weak one if your data is incomplete. If you want someone to set up your tracking and run your Meta campaigns this way, have a look at our digital advertising service.
