Google Ads for beginners: how to launch your first successful search campaign

Google Ads for beginners: how to launch your first successful search campaign

In short: Google search ads appear to people searching for your product right now, so they are often the shortest road to sales. For a first campaign: choose keywords with clear buying intent, write an ad that repeats the searcher’s words, send it to a page that answers the same request, set up conversion tracking before launch, and review the actual search terms every week, excluding what doesn’t fit.

On Snapchat and TikTok you interrupt people while they scroll. On Google it’s the opposite: people type what they’re looking for, and you appear with the answer. That’s why search ads bring quick results for products and services people search for by name, provided they’re built right.

1. Start from search intent

Not every keyword deserves an ad. Tell the difference between:

  • Buying intent: “buy oud perfume online”, “Salla store designer”, “price of device…”. Start with these.
  • Information intent: “what is oud”, “how do I make a store”. Better for content and your blog than for paid ads at the start.

Write a short list (15 to 30 keywords) that a person ready to buy would type, in formal Arabic, in dialect, and in English if your audience uses it.

2. Understand keyword match types

Google Ads Help describes three keyword match types:

  • Broad match: shows for searches related to the keyword’s meaning even if they don’t contain it. Powerful with good tracking and smart bidding, but it can spend on distant searches.
  • Phrase match: shows for searches that include the meaning of your phrase.
  • Exact match: shows for searches with the same meaning as the keyword. The most precise and controllable.

For a first campaign on a limited budget, start with phrase and exact, and widen later once you have enough conversions.

3. Write an ad that repeats the searcher’s language

  • Put the main keyword in the headline.
  • State clearly what sets you apart: delivery, warranty, price or experience.
  • Add a clear call to action: “Order now”, “Book an appointment”, “Chat on WhatsApp”.
  • Use ad assets: sitelinks, call, location and callouts.

4. The landing page sets your price

Google rates each keyword with a Quality Score (from 1 to 10), based on three things: expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. A slow page, or one that doesn’t answer the search, raises your cost and lowers your visibility.

So an ad for “oud perfume” goes to the oud perfume page, not the home page, and the page is fast on mobile with a clear button.

5. Set up conversion tracking before launch

Without tracking, Google doesn’t know which click brought an order, and neither do you. As Google explains in its conversion measurement help, tracking ties each order, call or form to the ad and keyword it came from. At a minimum, track: purchases (or form submissions), calls, and WhatsApp clicks.

6. Budget and bidding

Start with a daily budget that allows a reasonable number of clicks on your most important keywords, and a bidding strategy focused on clicks or conversions depending on how much data you have. As conversions build up, move to smarter strategies such as “target ROAS”, which according to Google needs at least 15 conversions in 30 days for Search campaigns.

7. The weekly routine

  1. Open the “search terms” report and see what people actually typed.
  2. Add irrelevant terms as negative keywords (such as: free, jobs, download).
  3. Pause keywords that spend without conversions after enough clicks.
  4. Test a new headline in the ad every two weeks.

Mistakes that burn budget

  • Broad match with no tracking and no negative keywords.
  • Accidentally targeting every country instead of Saudi Arabia or your cities.
  • Sending every ad to the home page.
  • Running ads 24 hours a day for a business that only answers during working hours.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google ads suitable for small stores?

Yes, if people search for your product. Start with a small number of high-intent keywords instead of a large campaign, and expand once you’re sure of your cost per order.

How long until results show?

The first data shows within days, but a real verdict usually takes two to four weeks of optimisation and collecting conversions.

What’s the difference between a Search campaign and Performance Max?

A Search campaign shows in search results for keywords you choose and control. Performance Max is an automated campaign that shows your ads across all of Google’s networks. To start, Search is clearer and easier to understand and control.

The bottom line

Successful Google ads start with buying-intent keywords, an ad that repeats the searcher’s language, a page that answers it, accurate tracking, and a weekly review. If you want someone to build and run the campaign with you, have a look at our digital advertising service.
