Click-to-WhatsApp ads: how to turn an ad into a conversation and a sale

In short: click-to-WhatsApp ads open a direct chat between the customer and your team instead of a web page. They suit services and products customers ask about before buying. Their success depends on fast replies, a clear welcome message, and recording every chat that turns into a sale. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, messages that follow a conversation started from an ad are free for a set period under Meta’s policy.

In Saudi Arabia, WhatsApp is the natural place to ask, negotiate and order. That’s why click-to-WhatsApp ads bring strong results for many kinds of business, provided the conversation is managed the way a sales page is.

How do they work?

You create the ad on Snapchat, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) or TikTok, and choose for its button to open a WhatsApp chat with your business number, usually with a pre-written message such as “Hi, I’d like to know more about the offer”. The customer taps, the chat opens, and the conversation starts with your team or a bot.

When do they suit your business?

  • Services that need a question: clinics, maintenance, design, real estate, courses.
  • Products with many options: sizes, colours, made to order.
  • Higher prices: customers need reassurance before paying.
  • An audience that dislikes filling in forms and prefers to talk directly.

On the other hand, for a simple low-priced product with an easy cart, the product page is usually faster to sell than a chat.

Prepare before the first riyal

  1. A verified business number: WhatsApp Business at least, and the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) if volume is high or you want a bot and integration with your systems.
  2. A welcome message: it replies instantly, says thanks, and asks one question that pins down the request.
  3. Ready replies for frequent questions: price, delivery, warranty, location.
  4. A team and hours: who replies, and when? An ad that brings chats nobody answers burns budget.

The cost on WhatsApp’s side

According to Meta’s documentation on WhatsApp Business Platform pricing, since 1 July 2025 pricing is per message sent by the business, at rates that vary by message category (marketing, utility, authentication) and by the recipient’s country, and messages sent by customers aren’t charged. What matters for click-to-WhatsApp ads:

  • Messages you send to a customer who came from a click-to-WhatsApp ad aren’t charged during the “free entry point window” after their message.
  • Service messages (your replies within 24 hours of the customer’s message) have a monthly free allowance per number, and some rules changed on 1 October 2026, so check the official page before you calculate.

This applies to the platform (API). The regular WhatsApp Business app doesn’t charge per message, but it is limited in volume and integration.

How do you measure sales from chats?

The biggest problem with these ads is that the sale happens in the chat, and the platform knows nothing about it. The fix:

  • Log every chat in a spreadsheet or a CRM: source, status and sale value.
  • Send a “purchase” event to the platform from your server when a chat becomes a sale, through Meta’s Conversions API or the equivalent on other platforms, so the platform learns who actually buys, not just who sends “hello”.
  • Calculate the cost per chat, the share that turns into a sale, and the final cost per sale.

Common mistakes

  • Replying hours later; the customer has spoken to three competitors since.
  • Sending a long price list instead of a question that understands the need.
  • Judging the campaign by the number of chats rather than the number of sales.
  • Collecting customers’ numbers and sending them marketing messages without their consent.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), or is the app enough?

To start at a small volume, the WhatsApp Business app is enough. If chats grow, or you need more than one staff member on the same number, a bot, or integration with your system, the platform is the choice.

Can a bot answer the chats?

Yes, through the WhatsApp Business Platform, provided it hands complex cases to a staff member. Read An AI WhatsApp chatbot.

How do I know a chat came from the ad?

Chats that come from the ad carry source information on the platform, and the pre-written message helps you tell them apart. Log them in one system from day one.

The bottom line

Click-to-WhatsApp ads turn an ad into a conversation and a conversation into a sale, provided replies are fast and sales are really measured. If you want someone to set up the campaign, the tracking and the reply flow, have a look at our digital advertising service.
